Monitoring one’s own response is essential to understanding any personal hormonal changes and benefits. This hormonal adaptation helps the body manage energy more efficiently and may reduce inflammation. Monitoring these levels is crucial, especially for those experiencing symptoms of deficiency. Higher levels typically enhance libido, contributing to better sexual functioning. The hormone also stimulates protein synthesis, assisting in muscle development and maintenance. It supports sperm production and improves sperm quality and count, which are vital for conception. Moreover, in lean individuals, exercise training has no lasting impact on basal testosterone levels, whereas, in obese individuals, it does. Stacy Sims, PhD, has popularized the idea that women respond differently to cold water immersion than men and cautions women against cold plunging at nearly freezing temperatures. For example, after a 9-hour dive in 4°C water, 21 male military trainees exhibited a significant reduction in total testosterone levels (Kelly et al. 2022). As more positive case studies emerge, the evidence supporting ice baths as an effective therapy for low testosterone is clarifying a previously held consensus based on misconceptions. Nevertheless, the science of cold plunge therapy for treating low testosterone in men and women is becoming increasingly convincing. The first is a 35-year-old male military vet who boosted his testosterone from 462 ng/dL in August 2023 to 868 ng/dL in February 2024 by doing 5-minute cold plunges without precooling at 47°F, then progressing to 40°F, often followed by sauna use shortly before sleep. Subsequent testing revealed an increase in David's testosterone levels to 1100 ng/dL in December 2023 and 1330 ng/dL by March 2024. Can combining cold showers with exercise enhance testosterone levels further? Not necessarily—while short-term boosts may occur, maintaining high testosterone levels requires a holistic approach that includes diet, exercise, and stress management. Staying in freezing water for too long may increase stress hormones like cortisol, which can counteract testosterone benefits. While cold showers and ice baths are often touted for their potential benefits, some men wonder whether hot water has the opposite effect. If ice baths contribute to better sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing muscle soreness, they may play an indirect role in optimizing testosterone levels. Additionally, cold plunges may enhance sleep quality, a critical factor in maintaining healthy testosterone levels. One of the main claims surrounding cold showers and testosterone is that exposure to cold water can stimulate testicular function. Blood labs comparing testosterone and estrogen are typically confusing, because these hormones are reported in different chemical units. The fact that the precooled group boosted testosterone at a time of day when it is expected to decline corroborates the previous findings in Sakamoto et al. (1991). Researchers noticed a significant boost in jumping velocity that is consistent with studies I cited in Precool Your Workout. Participants in competitive activities gain testosterone in anticipation of the competition and increase testosterone when they win (Casto & Edwards 2016). Researchers in Oslo, Norway who administered a fenugreek extract to ninety-five men for twelve weeks measured 10% increases in blood serum testosterone, compared to placebo controls (Lee-Ødegård et al 2024). When two Russian scientists working in sports medicine conducted a review of supplements that claim to boost testosterone, they found promising evidence only for Tongkat Ali, ashwagandha, and fenugreek. The potential for ice baths to enhance testosterone levels has become a significant focus of scientific inquiry. Within this complex interplay of hormones lies norepinephrine—a chemical crucially influenced by deliberate cold exposure such as immersing oneself in an ice bath. Some indicate significant elevation of testosterone following precooling exercises utilising methods like ice bath immersion while others suggest adverse effects where blood testosterone concentrations are lowered due to exposure to extreme cold. Start slow, be patient, and embrace the discomfort – the benefits of cold exposure therapy may be well worth the initial chill! To its role in muscle wellness, testosterone is crucial for maintaining robust energy levels and mental acuity. Exposing oneself to cold temperatures or utilizing other methods to raise testosterone can lead to numerous positive outcomes, including a lowered likelihood of developing prostate cancer. The release of norepinephrine is triggered more so when one’s body needs to adapt rapidly between hot and cold conditions, which results from noradrenaline secretion into the system. These hormones are part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to stressors like extreme temperatures. Read on to gain a clearer perspective on the possibility of an icy boost or a cold reality check. Plus, having a tub specifically for cold immersion can serve as a visual reminder and motivator to stick with your cold therapy routine. Effects of physical exercise and cold stimulation on serum testosterone level in men Cold showers and ice baths can complement these strategies, but they should not be relied upon as a primary method for testosterone enhancement. Using cold exposure strategically as part of a balanced lifestyle is the best way to maximize its effects. Cold plunge testosterone benefits include improved circulation, reduced muscle inflammation, and enhanced recovery from exercise. All other sex hormones, including testosterone and the estrogens, are derived from pregnenolone. To understand how to boost testosterone, it's important to first understand why it is so low in the first place. I've already published a follow-up article called The Prostate Protocol that goes into greater depth about using cold plunge therapy and a ketogenic diet to manage cancer risks and inhibit tumor growth. Moreover, low testosterone can be indicative of other serious underlying health concerns that TRT does not address. Despite the benefits, many men and women want to avoid being dependent on pharmaceuticals just to feel good.
